1. Nitrate Testing Clinics

Thirty-eight nitrate testing clinics were held in 36 Michigan counties in the spring of 1989. A mobile testing van was equipped for nitrate analysis of soil and water samples. Over 2,200 soil samples and 1500 water samples were analyzed for nitrate N using the nitrate ion-specific electrode. More than 50 percent of the soil samples . contained less than 30 lb of nitrate N in the surface two feet. Only 35 percent of the 1,100 fields were given a nitrogen credit based on the residual nitrate test....

2. Nitrate Test Clinics in Michigan

Nitrate contamination of groundwater in Michigan is becoming an increasing public concern. Fertilizer N, animal manures and rural septic systems have been implicated as possible nonpoint sources of contamination. A state wide program of monitoring nitrate N in soil and well water was initiated. In the spring of 1989 and 1990, 74 nitrate testing clinics were conducted. Over 3,600 soil samples and 1,900 water samples were analyzed for nitrate N using the nitrate ion-specific electrode. More soil nitrate...

3. Utilizing Fertilizer and Fungicide Strategies to Enhance Winter Wheat Grain and Straw Production

The establishment and overwintering success of Michigan winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L) are often determining yield factors but identifying both autumn and in-season practices that may enhance yield and economic return can be difficult. Additional demand for straw has growers considering inputs that may not only affect grain yield potential but also overall biomass production and serve as another means to improve profitability. Recent research has documented significant grain and straw... K. Steinke, L. Suplito, M. Chilvers

4. Impacts from Autumn Starter Fertilizer, Late-season Nitrogen, and Fungicide Timing on Winter Wheat Yield, Straw, and Quality

Increased demand for winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and climate uncertainties have Michigan growers exploring intensive management strategies to improve both yield and profitability. Field studies investigated the influence of both early and late-season fertilizer applications with multiple fungicide timings on the yield and quality of winter wheat grain and straw. A full-factorial, randomized complete block design investigated two rates of autumn starter fertilizer (AS) (12-40-0-10-1,... K. Steinke, M.K. Suplito, M. Chilvers
